Welcome to my blog! God is working in my life and He is using a Cryptic Pregnancy to do it! My faith and belief system was non existent before the start of this experience. Believing in anything was a foreign action to me. I forgot what it was like to stand up for what I believe in.
Many people I have spoken to have never heard of a Cryptic Pregnancy and have no idea what it is. I am here to share my experience with you.
Below is the definition of what a Cryptic Pregnancy is and also what causes one. Understanding the nature of these pregnancies is important when reading my blog.
What is a Cryptic Pregnancy?
It is a pregnancy where there is little or no detectable HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in the mother’s system. HCG is a hormone produced by the placenta after implantation and makes a home pregnancy test turn positive.
A baby that produces a scant amount of HCG might go “under the radar,” failing the pregnancy test and going undetected by mother and doctors, until delivery. Some of these women do not know they are indeed pregnant and some of them are aware.
Characteristics of a Cryptic Pregnancy:
- Negative urine and blood pregnancy tests
- Continued periods
- Negative ultrasounds
- Few pregnancy symptoms
- Slow growth of the abdomen
- Little or no fetal movement
- Longer gestational periods
What causes a Cryptic Pregnancy?
There are a number of reasons behind a cryptic pregnancy, some are hormonal and other psychological, though, the cases fall under the psychological reasons are comparatively very few in numbers.
A Cryptic Pregnancy could be an adaptive pattern of ‘forced cooperation’ between mother and fetus in stressful or threatening ecological circumstances, as suggested by the reported association with elevated psychosocial stress. In case of reduced survival probability, both mother and fetus would benefit if the mother reduced investment in pregnancy in order to maximize her chances of surviving and reaching delivery.
Other causes of cryptic pregnancy is the hormonal imbalance of the women like:
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS): Small cysts in the ovary which are not cancerous and harmful, but can cause hormonal imbalance in the woman
Perimenopause: Perimenopause is referred to around the time of menopause as the body shows signs of progression towards the menopause. This can occur even in thirties and go unidentified
Low body fat: The women (like an athlete) with low body fat can trigger hormonal imbalance
Lactating mothers: The mothers, still breastfeeding their babies, obviously, still have the hormones which don’t fall to normal levels
Birth control measures: The women who have used birth control methods (which obviously failed) recently (during getting pregnant) which release hormones continuously into the blood stream can cause cryptic pregnancy
